11 Mar Visiting Nemi – Italy
March, 2016
During our recent trip to Rome, Italy we had the opportunity to visit the lovely town of Nemi. We had heard a lot about it before and we were very curious to see it for ourselves. One train and two bus rides later, as soon as we stepped into the town, we were greeted by the wild strawberries on the store counters.
The wild strawberries – Fragoline di Bosco – of Nemi can either be found fresh, or in the form of tarts and marmalades all around. Every store holds various products made with these little, sweet sweet strawberries. It was also interesting to enter into the stores and restaurants, and see that they had caves within.
We had lunch in a Trattoria, and after the meal, we had a lovely desert, which was mainly strawberries, some cream and strawberry liquor on top. It was one of the best deserts we had! The amazing taste and freshness of these strawberries is something to crave for in the future. The ancient town, that’s history dates back to the 10th Century, is located on the Alban Hills and the view is magnificent. The whole town is overlooking the Nemi Lake, which is a crater lake.
It was such a delight to have a meal and enjoy the calm weather, as well as meeting the lovely people of Nemi. In terms of transportation, if you are taking public transportation, make sure you get the timetable for buses and trains before you leave for Nemi. There are taxis to accommodate; however, they are quite costly compared to the bus and train tickets.
